What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a holistic therapy that originates from Japan and is influenced by Chinese and Western knowledge. It is based on similar principles to acupuncture, but rather than needles, the practitioner uses thumbs and palm pressure to balance the flow of energy in the meridians, in order to promote well being, support good health and prevent illness. Shiatsu also includes gentle stretches and rotations of the limbs and joints.

Shiatsu helps prevent the build-up of stress, restores vitality, can prevent and relieve many conditions (such as sciatica, stress & anxiety, digestive or menstrual problems, back/neck/shoulder pain), improves immunity, relieves stiffness and tensions in muscles, is calming, grounding and deeply relaxing.

The treatment takes place on a futon mattress (on the floor) or on a chair and is given through loose and comfortable clothing.

What to Expect in a Shiatsu Session?

The session takes place on a futon at floor level although it is possible to receive Shiatsu sitting on a chair if you are unable to lie down. The client stays fully clothed.

Each session lasts approximately one hour. The first session may be slightly longer as I will take a detailed case history to develop a complete picture of your health according to the principles of Oriental Medicine.

I will consider your state of health, the symptoms you are experiencing and depending on your constitution and general energy levels, I will use a variety of techniques to improve your energy flow. These may include gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet on the meridians and when appropriate, more dynamic rotations and stretches.

Before & After Care Advices

Please bring or wear loose, warm, comfortable clothing, preferably cotton (sweatshirt, tracksuit &cotton socks)

Do not eat heavily in the two hours prior to treatment

Do not drink alcohol before or after the treatment

After the treatment, drink plenty of water to smooth the flow of changes through the system

If at all possible, avoid strenuous or stressful activities after your session
